Got Money? If you don’t or it’s not enough, how are you going to get more? The answer is YOU. Here are five steps you can take to put money in the bank:
1. Make a list of what you’re good at doing. If you’re not sure, ask people who know you well for their feedback. Think about where you’re at your best: indoors or outside, sitting or moving around, quiet or busy space, working alone or with others, routine or varied responsibilities and schedule?
2. Brainstorm. Think of ways you can put your talents and interests to work, either on your own or with a company. Here are some examples:
Musician: private lessons, performances, music or media store.
Artist: art supply store, gallery, interior design
Tech expert: computer repairs and maintenance, office
Athlete: private lessons, sports camps, caddy, life guard
Nature: landscaping, park maintenance, park tour guide
Teacher: camp counselor, nanny
Animal lover: pet care, vet or kennel assistant
People person: sales, service, tele-marketing
Multi-Tasker/Organizer: office, restaurant
3. Show up as your best self. Appearances matter, but how you act matters most. Offer a firm handshake. Look people in the eye. Be polite. Practice answering questions like: Why should I hire you? Why do you want this job? Record a cell phone voice message that sounds professional and clean up your online profile if necessary.
4. Be proactive. Ask for a job or advice on how to get one. Meet with as many people as you can, even if you think it’s not worth it. If you plant enough seeds, something is sure to sprout. Hearing “no thanks” is the worst thing that could happen—you can handle that. Always bring the names, cell and email addresses of at least two adults who will back up your character and work ethic.
5. Say thanks. Write everyone you meet a thank you note within 24 hours. Email is okay, but handwritten is classy and will be perceived as a sign of sincere interest in the job. This is one way you are guaranteed to stand out from the competition.
